Lexus’ Flagship EV

The Lexus TZ appears to follow the brand’s familiar luxury formula by taking a mainstream Toyota foundation and elevating it with sharper styling, a richer cabin, and a few notable new technologies. It enters the three-row luxury EV space with competitive range, distinctive design, and thoughtful comfort features such as upscale materials, ambient lighting, and available ottomans, though its performance and charging specs do not lead the segment. Some missing features—most notably hands-free driving and a front trunk—keep it from feeling fully cutting-edge, but overall the TZ looks like a credible and attractive addition to Lexus’ growing EV lineup.

WHY IT MATTERS: Toyota has long been criticized for being slow on EV development, but the recent improvements to the RZ, the new ES Electric, and now the TZ suggest Lexus is intending to try and remain competitive while continuing to offer hybrids alongside their newer EVs.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Stylish and competent, the TZ is not the also-ran the original RZ was, and should be a viable alternative to the Volvo EX90 and Cadillac Vistiq.

VW’s Affordable EV

The VW ID. Polo represents Volkswagen’s long-awaited push into the affordable EV market, packaging familiar hatchback proportions with a roomier interior and a practical, proven powertrain. It brings welcome usability improvements such as a return to physical controls, solid standard driver-assistance features, and respectable range for its class, but it also feels conservative given the long development arc and earlier concept excitement. In the end, the ID. Polo seems positioned as a sensible, user-focused electric hatchback rather than a bold breakthrough, which may appeal to mainstream buyers even if it leaves enthusiasts wanting more.

WHY IT MATTERS: VW has been talking about an affordable EV for seven years, and this new entry seems primed to take on similar offerings from Stellantis and Renault (as well as the Chinese).

THE BOTTOM LINE: Handsome and well-put-together, but may be too conservative for some in the face of stylish alternatives like the Renault 5.

To the Moon!

The Dreame Nebula Next 01 Jet Edition is an audacious concept that pushes beyond conventional EV performance into something closer to science fiction, combining extreme acceleration claims with rocket-booster theatrics and a suite of highly advanced technologies. Backed by Dreame’s surprising expansion from robotic vacuums into automotive development, the vehicle appears designed as a statement piece that challenges the boundaries of what an electric hypercar could be. While many of its headline features remain difficult to verify until production details emerge, the project signals serious ambition and suggests the company intends to become a disruptive force in the future performance EV market.

WHY IT MATTERS: Some of the newer Chinese startups have stated some rather extreme goals, but, after seeing Xiaomi’s success, perhaps Dreame has a chance.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Will the Nebula Next beat Tesla’s rocket-powered Roadster to market? It’s anyone’s guess.
