Welcome to Ioniq Universe
The Hyundai Venus is a wedge-shaped sedan concept that previews the future of Hyundai’s Ioniq sub-brand in China, debuting alongside the broader “Ioniq Universe” at the Beijing Motor Show. More angular than the Ioniq 6 and visually reminiscent of Honda’s 0 Series Saloon, Venus features a lightweight, frame-structured roof, a transparent rear spoiler, and a highly driver-focused interior. Inside, a wraparound cockpit uses layered mood lighting inspired by Venus’s glowing atmosphere, complemented by suede surfaces and chrome-gold trim. A double-width display stretches across the center and passenger side, while the driver relies primarily on a head-up-style digital instrument layout.
Hyundai Earth is a compact SUV concept designed to embody the vitality and biological balance of the planet, blending rugged styling with immersive, nature-inspired interior themes. Visually, it shares cues with the earlier Crater concept, incorporating skid plates, exposed bolts, and a purposeful stance. The interior introduces “air-hug” seats made from soft air modules, mood lighting that simulates moving tree shadows, and so-called “shy-tech” elements that remain hidden until needed. Subtle design touches include surfaces etched with concealed maps of Beijing, reinforcing Hyundai’s China-focused approach, where future Ioniq models are named after planets and positioned as orbiting around Chinese consumers, symbolically cast as the Sun.
WHY IT MATTERS: Although the Ioniq sub-brand is five years old, it has yet to appear in the Chinese market, so these concepts point to a family of China-specific Ioniq models, each named for a planet. They will take on the numerous Chinese EVs from both startups and legacy players.
THE BOTTOM LINE: We’ll see a production China-market Ioniq at the Beijing Motor Show, but it does raise the question of whether Chinese tastes are so completely different from the rest of the world that Hyundai needed a completely different EV portfolio.
Freelander Rebooted
Freelander is being revived not as a single model, but as a new automotive brand born from the partnership between JLR and Chery, with Concept97 previewing the first of six vehicles planned over five years. While inspired by the original 1997 Land Rover Freelander, this modern interpretation is far larger, stretching roughly 5.1 meters long with three rows of seats and distinctive rear coach doors. Underneath, it rides on an 800V electrical architecture with a cell-to-pack platform supporting pure EV, EREV, and PHEV configurations, alongside Huawei-powered automated driving using dual-path lidar. It also debuts what’s claimed to be the world’s first intelligent all-terrain system, paired with a CATL Freevoy battery capable of up to 360kW charging and engineered for off-road durability.
WHY IT MATTERS: JLR is learning, like other automakers, that if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, and so they are following BMW, Mercedes, et al, to team up with a Chinese automaker to better understand the market and learn best practices from those working at “Chinese speed”. The only confusing choice is keeping Freelander out of JLR’s “house of brands”—unless they feel it’s too close in concept to Discovery.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Hard to say without seeing the final production vehicle(s), but Concept 97 seems to embody the original Freelander—even if it is much bigger.
Cupra’s New Entry EV
The Cupra Raval is the first fully revealed vehicle on VW Group’s new low-cost MEB Plus platform, marking a major step for the performance-focused brand in Europe even as it remains absent from the U.S. market. A compact electric hatch closely aligned with the 2022 Urban Rebel concept, the Raval features front-wheel drive, a torsion-beam rear suspension, and styling defined by a shark-nose front end and coupe-like roofline. It competes directly with the Renault 5 and Mini Cooper Electric, offering multiple battery and motor options ranging from a 37 kWh LFP pack to a 52 kWh NMC setup, and up to 222 horsepower in VZ performance trim. Inside, the Raval uses animated light projections on the door panels and sustainable 3D-knit materials, though it retains the haptic sliders found in larger Cupra models, a choice that may be revisited in future updates.
WHY IT MATTERS: Cupra may be VW Group’s newest brand, but they got to take the lead fully unveiling the first entry off MEB Plus, a key part of VW Group’s strategy in Europe to battle the wave of stylish and affordable EVs from Stellantis, Ford, Renault/Nissan, and Hyundai/Kia.
THE BOTTOM LINE: It looks good and offers competitive range and performance numbers, and so might have what it takes to win; it will be interesting to see how the upcoming ID Polo compares.
