If You Build Sedans, Will They Come?

There’s been plenty written lately about whether a sedan comeback is possible, with all sorts of rumors of various vehicles (such as a new rear-drive Buick) under development while some sedans (like the Altima) are disappearing. While some automakers ponder whether to re-enter this segment, Hyundai’s sedans are showing some strength here in the US market.

Hyundai’s July sales were up 4%, but the Sonata was up 18% and the Elantra up a whopping 39%. That made the Elantra Hyundai’s second best seller after the Tucson. Even more surprising is that the Elantra is nearing the end of its lifecycle, with a new model recently revealed overseas. You don’t normally expect record sales from a vehicle at the end of its lifecycle (although Dodge’s Durango is another exception to the rule).

You can bet that automakers’ analysts and market researchers are trying to determine if this is a flash in the plan or truly a trend. Personally, I’m hoping for the latter...
