Abracadabra! Fiat Creates a Family-Friendly Transformer

Fiat has already been mining the legacy of the innovative Multipla people-mover from the 1950s in its four-passenger Multiplina electric city car--and now goes big with the Multiplay concept unveiled in Paris. What starts as a three-row B-segment MPV transforms from a 6+1 seat (that's six humans and one pet) configuration to a four-passenger pickup with the help of a sliding rear roof section that opens up a small pickup bed. That rear spoiler section in MPV form rotates 90 degrees and becomes an integrated when the Multiplay is in pickup form.

The exterior picks up cues from newer Fiats like the Grande Panda and Grizzly, with pixelated lighting, an enlarged Fiat wordmark, large geometric-patterned wheels, and SUV-inspired matte black wheelarch trims. The interior—featuring a bright watermelon-inspired color scheme)—includes two clever seating ideas. The 'petsenger seat' (the green item in the interior photo, below) includes a detachable outer section that can be used as a leash. It can also be used as a mounting point for a child car seat or as a storage compartment.

Up front, the passenger seat can transform into a rear-facing 'sunseat' lounge chair, using the dashboard as a backrest. Much of the interior uses a monomaterial textile, with a no-stitch 3D knit process that minimizes waste. You'll also note the absence of a traditional dashboard, with instead a full-width display at the base of the windshield (like BMW's panoramic iDrive) and a handful of physical controls near the driver.

Fiat has not provided any technical specs, but has hinted that a production version of the Multiplay isn't out of the question (although that sliding roof setup seems potentially difficult to execute in volume production). With Citroën publicly discussing reinventing the MPV and Renault's E-Space concept, the time might be right for a European family vehicle that isn't an SUV.
