VW's Screwy Plan to Charge for Horsepower


They say that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. It appears VW's strategy and marketing teams missed all the lessons learned from BMW's ill-fated attempt to charge people a subscription for heated seats. At least, in this case, VW is offering a 'lifetime' fee (e.g., the same thing as ordering more horsepower directly from the factory).


The problem is a worst-of-both-worlds scenario, as the ID.3 comes rated at 228 hp from the factory, which drives higher insurance rates--but you don't actually get 228 hp unless you pony up some euros. This sounds easily fixable, doesn't it? Let's see how long it takes VW to get their house in order...
