The Sedan and Wagon Renaissance Continues

Potential Volvo EV60 (source: Autocar)
Potential Volvo EV60 (source: Autocar)

With buyers having the choice of BMW’s new i3 (in both sedan and wagon forms), Mercedes’ new C-Class Electric, and the upcoming A4 e-tron (which, hopefully, will include an Avant variant), Volvo is reportedly considering bringing back a luxury sedan and wagon into US showrooms. Likely badged S60/V60 (or S70/V70), these ~$50,000 EVs would leverage the new SPA3 architecture underpinning the new EX60--and so likely to be very competitive against the leading European brands.

Volvo’s CEO has already hinted the portfolio will include more than just SUVs by the end of the decade, and these new entries would provide a somewhat more affordable entry--as well as better EV performance due to lower mass and better aero. An unnamed source tells Automotive News these products are already in development for Europe (and, I would assume, China), so adding them to the US would be relatively simple.

Let’s see what happens in the next couple of years...
