Peaq Performance
The Skoda Peaq positions the Czech brand at the upper end of the electric SUV market, translating Skoda’s value-focused reputation into a larger, more premium three-row EV aimed at rivals such as the Kia EV9 and Peugeot E-5008. WHY IT MATTERS: Skoda has turned into quite the success story for VW, and the brand is strong for them to venture upmarket into higher-margin vehicles. This also gives Skoda a unique vehicle in Europe in the VW Group; none of the other brands offer a midsize three-row electric SUV, putting Skoda out front in challenging Kia, Peugeot, and others.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Stylish, smart, and capable, the Peaq offers a strong value proposition in the family EV SUV segment.
Sharper Elantra
The latest Hyundai Elantra evolves the compact sedan with Hyundai’s Art of Steel design language, growing longer and wider while adopting sharply sculpted bodywork, slim lighting, a distinctive H Edge headlamp signature, and a unique greenhouse with standalone quarter windows. It launches with conventional 2.0-liter and 1.6-liter hybrid powertrains, with the hybrid adding predictive regenerative braking and a stay mode that can run cabin systems while parked. The cabin focuses on comfort and modern technology, combining a cocoon-like layout, available Bang & Olufsen audio, built-in camera, dual wireless charging, high-power USB ports, a large central touchscreen, physical HVAC controls, the new Pleos operating system, and Gleo AI assistant, supported by a broad suite of advanced driver-assistance features.
WHY IT MATTERS: While some automakers have backed out of car segments, Hyundai is all in, able to leverage the economies of scale that come with a global sales footprint. Hyundai is also raising the bar on design, bringing a bold look to a traditionally conservative segment.
THE BOTTOM LINE: An affordable sedan that doesn't look cheap, with available tech that used to be restricted to luxury brands.
Zoox Gets Real
Amazon’s Zoox robotaxi is moving closer to broader deployment after years of development, with large-scale production planned in California and updated details aimed at improving real-world usability and safety. Exterior refinements, such as relocated bidirectional reflectors, help pedestrians understand the vehicle’s orientation, while improved two-way audio enables communication among riders, remote support staff, and first responders. Inside, the lighter stone gray and aloe green cabin is designed to make belongings easier to spot, with added seat padding, larger cupholders, and more durable materials, though Zoox still awaits regulatory approval to charge for rides as it continues operations and testing in several U.S. cities.
WHY IT MATTERS: After several years of uncertainty, discussions around robotaxi strategy and implementation boomed last year, and Amazon--one of the oldest players in this space--is finally ready to bring their vast resources to bear. With GM's Cruise Origin cancelled, the only real direct competitor in the US is Waymo's new Ojai, their recently announced partnership with Uber will help with the rollout.
THE BOTTOM LINE: The updates appear to be very user-oriented, but there will probably still be some level of skepticism from those unwilling to let a computer do the driving.
Cybercab Gets Real
Tesla’s Cybercab appears to be progressing from reveal-stage concept toward production reality, with reports of units coming off the line and an official EPA Certificate of Conformity revealing key technical details. Design updates seen in public suggest practical revisions such as a reshaped rear end and larger doors, while the published specifications point to an unusually light EV with a 219-hp front motor, a modest payload for two occupants and luggage, and an estimated range near 290 miles from a 48-kWh battery. Despite those signs of progress, major questions remain around charging hardware, whether final vehicles will include steering controls, ultimate pricing, launch timing, and the state-level permits required before a commercial autonomous ride-hailing network can operate.
WHY IT MATTERS: With the Model S and X dead, the Cybertruck faltering, and the Model 3 and Y aging, Tesla needs to new product to help generate revenue. The company has ridiculously high hopes for the Cybercab, but launch-related mishaps (including multiple instances of failure to file the right paperwork) could endanger the rollout plans. The vehicle itself seems technically competent but there remain numerous open questions about implementation.
THE BOTTOM LINE: At the very least, the Cybercab appears to be proof of concept for Tesla's new 'unboxed' manufacturing strategy.
Shell Game
Shell’s Triple 10 Challenge is an efficiency-focused EV concept built around three ambitious targets: 10 kilometers per kWh, 10 metric tonnes of lifetime CO2 emissions, and a 10-minute 10-to-80-percent charge. Rather than previewing a production vehicle, the concept demonstrates how lightweight recycled components, a smaller battery, and direct immersion cooling using Shell Recharge dielectric thermal fluid could reduce battery cost, improve thermal management, and enable rapid charging on a common 175-kW charger. As a proof of concept, it primarily serves as a showcase for Shell’s thermal-fluid technology and its potential role in lowering the environmental impact and charging time of future EVs.
WHY IT MATTERS: Although it seems counterintuitive for an oil company to delve into EVs, it represents Shell's efforts to broaden their business portfolio in the face of a changing mobility landscape.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Some clever technology being showcased here could find its way into future production EVs.
